About this book

After experiencing a precognitive dream that ends her engagement and changes her life forever, a young psychology professor from California decides to get a fresh start by taking a job at Duke University in North Carolina. She soon becomes obsessed with the files from the world-famous Rhine parapsychology lab experiments, which attempted to prove ESP really exists. Along with a handsome professor, she uncovers troubling cases, including one about a house supposedly haunted by a poltergeist, investigated by another research team in 1965. Unaware that the entire original team ended up insane or dead, the two professors and two exceptionally gifted Duke students move into the abandoned mansion to replicate the investigation, with horrifying results.

It is the late 1960s, and in the small university town of Brazil, Ohio, a young white girl embarks on a journey of political and sexual awakening the summer after Martin Luther King is assassinated. Chafing against her parents and what she perceives as their romanticized white liberal notions of integration, Tish tries to take on the characteristics of her militant black girlfriends. Her desire to be one of them is so strong it's palpable, yet no matter how hard she tries, she encounters a wall. All of Tish's confusion and loneliness seem to disappear when she meets and falls in love with Goody, a black man of nineteen who arouses in Tish a new sense of herself. But it will take a heartbreaking betrayal to help Tish truly make sense of her world, in a way that no one else can do for her. Stopping for Green Lights is a poignant evocation of the potent desire to fit in and the grander ambition to be extraordinary.

"The Virginity of Famous Men, award-winning story writer Christine Sneed's deeply perceptive collection on the human condition, features protagonists attempting to make peace with the paths they have taken thus far. In "The Prettiest Girls," a location scout for a Hollywood film studio falls in love with a young Mexican woman who is more in love with the idea of stardom than with this older American man who takes her with him back to California. "Clear Conscience" focuses on the themes of family loyalty, divorce, motherhood, and whether "doing the right thing" is, in fact, always the right thing to do. In "Beach Vacation," a mother realizes that her popular and coddled teenaged son has become someone she has difficulty relating to, let alone loving with the same maternal fervor that once was second nature to her. The title story, "The Virginity of Famous Men," explores family and fortune"--
