Fritjof Capra

The Tao of Physics is a book about the relationship between physics and spirituality. The book explores the parallels between Eastern mysticism and modern physics. It discusses the similarities between the two fields, and how they can be used to help understand each other. The book also discusses the concept of the Tao, or the way, and how it relates to physics. The Tao of Physics is considered to be one of the first books to popularize the concepts of modern physics for a general audience. It has been translated into many languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

Essays in the history and philosophy of science

Pierre Duhem

Here, for the first time in English, are the philosophical essays - including the first statement of the "Duhem Thesis" - that formed the basis for Aim and Structure of Physical Theory, together with new translations of the historiographical essays presenting the equally celebrated "Continuity Thesis" by Pierre Duhem (1861-1916), a founding figure of the history and philosophy of science. Prefaced by an introduction on Duhem's intellectual development and continuing significance, here as well are important subsequent essays in which Duhem elaborated key concepts and critiqued such contemporaries as Henri Poincare and Ernst Mach. Together, these works offer a lively picture of the state of science at the turn of the century while addressing methodological issues that remain at the center of debate today.

This book is designed as a textbook for students who need to fulfil their science requirements. Part I explores classical physics from its beginnings with Descartes, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, to the relativity theories of Einstein. Special emphasis is given to the development of the objective, materialist, and deterministic worldview of classical physics. The influence of Newtonian physics on other fields of science and on society is emphasized. Finally, some of the problems with the worldview of classical physics are discussed and a preview of quantum physics is given.

Most of the book is viewable on Google Books. Quotes from distinguished authors about it are posted on the Scribd.com website under the free draft intro chapters from my forthcoming book "The Brainstem Brainwaves of Atman-Brahman". O/OM was originally intended as a 'cosmology' written in verse describing the Individual's relation to his greater 'wholes' right up to the level of the cosmos. Whilst writing explanatory essays for the poetry, I identified the physical correlate of the Divine Light of Pure Consciousness (a.k.a. Atman, Cit, Godhead, Buddha Nature, Christ, Light of Cosmic Wisdom (Sophia) Nous, Al Haqq etc.) with a brain process known to all Medics - the brainwaves from the brainstem Reticular Formation known as the Reticular Activating System. I then went on to show how the whole of Western Physicalist Science is a set of limited abstractions describing regular spatiotemporal phenomena. The Bigger, Deeper Transcendentalist core picture of Indian Yogic Mysticism based on the Primacy of Consciousness swallows up the Western picture and can also account for Consciousness, Creativity, Inspiration, and the paranormal psychic phenomena and unexplained paradoxes of Quantum Physics which transcend the limitations of Physicalist Ontology.
