Theory of objective mind

by Hans Freyer (1998)

About this book

Theory of Objective Mind is the first book of the important German philosopher Hans Freyer to appear in English. Freyer took what remained valid in G. F. Hegel's work and drew upon the subsequent insights of the early work of Edmund Husserl in an effort to understand the nature of culture by clarifying methodologically the process of Verstehen, the relation between life and objectivated form and the formation of the historical world as described by Wilhelm Dilthey and especially Georg Simmel. Theory of Objective Mind is indispensable for all those who seek to understand culture philosophically as well as historically or sociologically.

Anthony Levi

"In this new survey of the development of European intellectual culture between about 1300 and 1535, Anthony Levi offers a fresh view of the Renaissance and the Reformation, calling for a reassessment of the nature of both. Through a radical and detailed examination of the significant intellectual, spiritual, and ideological developments across Europe during this period, Levi disputes the discontinuities commonly understood to explain and defend the events we term the "Renaissance" and the "Reformation." He argues that the renewed cult of the literary, visual, and educational norms of classical antiquity were a consequence - not the essence or cause - of the Renaissance. Further, the Reformation emerged from a cultural movement that neither constituted a historical break nor led to the catastrophic religious clashes of the sixteenth century. He offers a revisionist account of the collapse of scholastic intellectual systems and traces its course."--BOOK JACKET.

"Based on a total of 18 months of fieldwork in Shaanbei (northern Shaanxi Province), this book is the first book-length ethnographic case study of the revival of a popular religious temple in contemporary rural China. The book reveals that "doing popular religion" is much more complex than praying to gods and burning incense. It examines the organizational and cultural logics that inform the staging of popular religious activities such as temple festivals. It also shows the politics behind the religious revival: the village-level local activists who seize upon temples and temple associations as a valuable political, economic, and symbolic resource, and the different local state agents who interact with temple associations and temple bosses." "The study sheds unique light on shifting state-society relationships in the reform era and is of interest to scholars and students in Asian Studies, the social sciences, and religious and ritual studies."--BOOK JACKET.

"Seminal work deals with the import and political consequences of the most influential approaches to the study of Latin American literature in the US. Chief virtue resides in scholarly method: a deep investigation of the theoretical foundations of major contributions. Essays demonstrate how many important approaches lack theoretical rigor due to a failure to investigate the philosophical grounding of the ideas deployed in the literary studies. A crucial book for serious critics. Absolutely required for all work on the boom and critical approaches that brought it about and maintain it; as well as for colonial discourse, testimonio, hegemony and ideology, and 'invention' approaches"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
