Topics on Riemann surfaces and Fuchsian groups

by E. Bujalance, A.F. Costa, E. Martínez (2001)

About this book

Presents a cross-section of different aspects of Riemann surfaces, introducing the reader to the basics as well as highlighting new developments in the field. It provides a mixture of classical material, recent results and some non-mainstream topics. The book is based on lectures from the conference Topics on Riemann Surfaces and Fuchsian Groups held in Madrid to mark the 25th anniversary of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. For those wishing to pursue research in this area, this volume offers a valuable summary of contemporary thought and a source of fresh geometric and algebraic insights. The book will be suitable for graduate courses, as well as providing a useful reference for those already working in geometry, group theory, complex analysis, algebraic geometry, topology and theoretical physics.

The enormous advances in observational techniques over the last two decades has produced a wealth of data and unexpected discoveries which have helped to reshape astrophysics as a field with well-formulated theories and sophisticated numerical calculations. In nuclear particle physics, plasma physics, as well as in general relativity, the Universe has become a laboratory for cutting-edge research. The courses collected in the book are intended to provide students with this insight, giving a general background on each topic such as cosmic rays, nuclear and neutrino astrophysics, solar physics and strong fields, as well as a presentation of the current research and open problems. The book is aimed at graduate students in physics and astrophysics, as well as researchers, bridging a gap between the specialized reviews and the comprehensive books.

The Arti?cial Evolution conference was originally conceived as a forum for the French-speaking Evolutionary Computation community, but has of late been acquiring an European audience, with several papers from Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain... However, AE remains as intended a small and friendly gathering, which will continue to be held every two years. Previous AE meets were held in Toulouse, Brest, and Nˆ ?mes. This year, the hosting was done by the LIL (Laboratoire d’Informatique du Littoral) in the not-so-cold city of Dunkerque. The invited talk on “Fitness Landscapes and Evolutionary Algorithms” was delivered by Colin Reeves of Coventry University This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the conference. Twenty-seven papers were presented orally at the conference, selected from over 40 papers refereed by the program committee. After the conference, each p- sentation was reviewed and 20 papers were retained and revised for publication in this volume. The papers in this volume have been grouped into the following ?ve sections which more or less re?ect the organization of the oral presentations. 1. Invited Paper: C. Reeves brightly describes the state of the art in Fitness Landscapes.

Proceedings of Session VII of the Tenth International Symposium on Chromaffin Cell Biology, held August 25--28, 1999, in Bergen, Norway, and a post-symposium workshop on Chromogranins: from Fundamental Physiology to Clinical Aspects, held August 28, 1999, on board the coastal steamer MS Richard With. This book deals with the chromogranins, secretory prohormones from the diffuse neuroendocrine system. The current concepts of their structure, biogenesis, biosynthesis, secretion, tissue-specific distribution, and processing are presented for the first time all within one volume, with emphasis on the functional aspects of the biologically active sequences and the clinical perspectives of the circulation prohormones.
