Sketchbook
Timothy O'Donnell
This book explores influential designers' sketchbooks as a truer reflection of a designer's thought processes, preoccupations, and problem-solving strategies than can be had by simply viewing finished projects.

by Pamela Howard (2009)
Scenography is becoming a universally used term in professional theatre practice and education, but what exactly is it? This volume is a very personal and direct response to this question by one of the world's leading scenographers. The result is a provocative re-evaluation of the traditional role and methods of theatre designers, pointing towards a more holistic approach to making theatre. Pamela Howard examines scenography from many different perspectives including: * Space * Text * Research * Colour and Composition * Performers * Spectators. Part polemic and part critical analysis, the text is enriched with anecdotes and case studies taken from Howard's career and extensive research into the subject. Illustrated with brilliant examples of Pamela Howard's own work, this book is a must for all visual theatremakers.

Stacy L. Kamehiro
"The Arts of Kingship" offers a sustained and detailed account of Hawaiian public art and architecture during the reign of David Kalakaua, the nativist and cosmopolitan ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1874 to 1891. Stacy Kamehiro provides visual and historical analysis of four key monuments - Kalakaua's coronation and regalia, the King Kamehameha Statue, 'Iolani Palace, and the Hawaiian National Museum - drawing them together in a common historical, political, and cultural frame. Each articulated Hawaiian national identities and navigated the turbulence of colonialism in distinctive ways and has endured as a key cultural symbol. These cultural projects were part of the monarchy's concerted effort to promote a national culture in the face of colonial pressures, internal political divisions, and declining social conditions for Native Hawaiians, which, in combination, posed serious threats to the survival of the nation. Kamehiro interprets the images, spaces, and institutions as articulations of the complex cultural entanglements and creative engagement with international communities that occur with prolonged colonial contact. Nineteenth-century Hawaiian sovereigns celebrated Native tradition, history, and modernity by intertwining indigenous conceptions of superior chiefly leadership with the apparati and symbols of Asian, American, and European rule."--Book cover.

"This catalog has been published in conjunction with the exhibition Thomas Ruff, K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf 12.09.2020-7.2.2021"--Colophon. "Thomas Ruff is one of the most important contemporary German photographers living today. Studying under Bernd and Hilla Becher, Ruff experimented with large-format printing. This comprehensive book focuses on his photographic series from the past twenty years. These series are based on found photographs from a variety of sources. The source materials range from early nineteenth century photography to machinemade photographs of distant planets, from post-war press photos to propaganda images from the People's Republic of China, and from Internet pornography to computer generated photograms. In each series, Ruff explores the historical and technical conditions of photography by examining these highly varied pictorial worlds. At the same time, he takes into consideration the afterlife of the images in archives, databases, and on the Internet, thus formulating highly complex perspectives on the photographic medium and the world that has already been photographed"--Publisher's website.
