Wherever we go

by Hou Hanrue and Gabi Scardi (2006)

About this book

They cross borders, spanning territories and cultures; wherever they go they gather information and borrow images, styles, and languages. For a variety of reasons, they have left their native soil. They are artists from around the world: from Europe to Southeast Asia, the Middle East to America. What unites them is an intercultural outlook that is not a deliberate choice, but a response to the stimuli and the influences of the different environments in which they have ended up living. Published in conjunction with the exhibition co-organized by the Spazio Oberdan in Milan and the San Francisco Art Institute, Wherever We Go brings together more than fifty works (videos, sculptures, installations, drawings, and photographs) by twenty-three artists from around the world. Challenging any unequivocal or simplistic definition, the works of these artists invite us to reflect on themes of displacement and migration, citizenship and representation. The works convey the complex and stratified character of today's society, and reflect a composite world, with fluid borders and broadened horizons, a world permeated by tensions and anything but at peace in its many components, but one that is culturally rich and fascinating.

Philosophie des Unbewussten

Eduard von Hartmann, with a preface by C.K. Ogden

V.1 The class of books to which the "Philosophy of the Unconscious" belongs is all but unrepresented in our literature, but the absence of similar home-productions can no longer be held to imply either an inability to comprehend their scope or an indifference to their results. To what shall we attribute the welcome accorded of late to certain reproductions and elucidations of the master-works of modern Transcendentalism, if not to the awakening of a long-repressed desire to re-examine the foundations of a spiritual fabric, for whose stability an instinctive confidence alone made answer? To many two attitudes of mind have become insupportable--that of total unconcern about fundamental truth, and that of unthinking acquiescence in the admission of merely juxtaposed and uncommunicating spheres of positive knowledge and impenetrable nescience. Specifically, this volume looks at the metaphysic of the unconscious. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved).

"Kara Walker: Narratives of a Negress presents a comprehensive overview of Walker's work, beginning with her first cut-paper wall installation, Gone, An Historical Romance of a Civil War as it Occurred between the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart, 1994, through new multimedia installations that feature layers of colored projections. The 1996 series of twenty-four watercolors, Brown Follies, is reproduced in full, as are many views of Walker's past exhibitions. Throughout the book is a selection of Walker's writings printed as they appear typed on index cards. These writings reveal a rarely seen side of the artist, whose words are as provocative as her installations and drawings. Also included are four essays that discuss Walker's place in art history, formal and narrative dimensions of her work, her relation to culture at large, and issues of race, sexuality, and representation addressed in her art."--Jacket.
