Yoga in modern India

by Joseph S. Alter (2004)

About this book

Challenges the popular view that yoga is timeless and unchanging by examining the history of yoga, focusing on its emergence in modern India and its dramatically changing form and significance in the twentieth century. Alter argues that yoga's transformation into a popular activity idolized for its health value is based on modern ideas about science and medicine. He centers his analysis on an interpretation of the seminal work of Swami Kuvalayananda, one of the chief architects of the Yoga Renaissance in the early twentieth century. From this point of orientation Alter explores current interpretations of yoga and considers how practitioners of yogic medicine and fitness combine the ideas of biology, physiology, and anatomy with those of metaphysics, transcendence, and magical power. --From publisher description.

Environmentally devastated neighborhoods

Michael R. Greenberg and Dona Schneider

Only 3% of all Americans believe they live in bad neighborhoods. But 30% to 45% of those who live in places with crime and illegal drug sales, rats and stray dogs, hazardous waste sites, factory pollution, and abandoned and blighted buildings rate their neighborhood as poor quality. Even when these neighborhoods have good schools, parks, and other amenities, their resident's ratings do not go up. This holds true no matter who is asked - young, old, men or women, middle class, working class, or on welfare. Local health and planning officials corroborate resident perceptions. It is particularly noticeable that stress from living near a toxic waste site - the hazard that gets the biggest attention in terms of dollars spent - is low on the resident's list of fears about their neighborhoods. They'd much prefer to see the money put to fixing the immediate dangers on their block. But because federal and state government policies for protecting public health, lowering crime, and saving the environment are divided into separate bureaucratic cubby-holes, effective planning to improve these stressed neighborhoods is difficult. Beginning with the call for a definition of "environment" that fits the realities of these places, the authors argue for and propose policy initiatives that address all the desperate needs of these beleaguered neighborhoods. . This book is essential reading for students, academics, and professionals in environmental studies, public health, urban studies and planning, as well as grassroots community organizers.

Volunteers

Jone L. Pearce

"We know very little about how and why individuals volunteer to work in organizations, and we know even less about how their efforts are organized and directed once they are at work. Some organizations utilizing volunteers waste the human resources they have; others manage to work effectively and provide invaluable services. Yet there has been little attempt to understand the organizational behavior of volunteers and make better use of their talents." "Volunteers is the first comprehensive book on the organizational behavior of volunteer workers. It explores why people volunteer for organizational work, drawing upon original research and the existing scholarly work in this field. A central theme of the book is the uncertainty volunteers have of their own roles in the organization in which they work, with all the potential frustration that this can elicit." "However, much of the existing advice to volunteers or those employing them can be misleading or unhelpful. In her study, Jone L. Pearce looks at successful and unsuccessful organizations in areas such as the arts, social services and health care. She discusses the implications of volunteers on general theories of organizational behavior, and also outlines the practical effects of an understanding of volunteer workers for all organizations employing them. Volunteers will be valuable to managers and also to psychologists interested in organizational behavior."--BOOK JACKET.
