About this book

Examining Newspapers reviews recent, significant findings about newspapers and the newspaper industry. Arranged in chapters from news gathering through writing, editing, management, readership, and audience effects, this insightful volume focuses on continuing, important themes in newspaper research. The author presents key studies and synthesizes their results to draw conclusions concerning what current research tells us about publishing audience-relevant information and about competing successfully for people's time and dollars. In addition, the volume is extensively referenced to lead readers back to the original research articles from which answers have been drawn.

The questions and answers in [this book] originated in 1994 as a monthly newspaper column entitled Management Matters, which continues to be published six years and over 100 questions later.... The questions in this book reflect concerns ... from practitioners, business owners, managers, and employees. They also reflect trends ... in the rapidly changing HRM environment, particularly in strategic and global human resource management. Each question in this book is listed alphabetically by a guide word or phrase that indicates the major issue. The question pages include key words and concepts, discussion points, and a suggested reference. [This book] is designed as a supplemental text in an introductory human resource management course or graduate HRM seminar. [The authors] have used the questions in the book to help [their] undergraduate and graduate students focus on practical applications of theoretical approaches to HRM, which are the standard elements of a general text. -Pref

Donald Gibson

In this intriguing and penetrating analysis, Don Gibson does not simply replay the standard commentaries on the Kennedy presidency, many of which are ill-informed, even if well-meaning. Gibson looks at what JFK himself said, wrote, and did, contrasting that with the words and actions of his enemies - the Wall Street Journal, Fortune magazine, and the corporate and banking magnates themselves, who, as this book shows, truly despised the President.

The "How Much" Factor: Your success as a trader has little to do with selecting the right investment or even having a great system. Instead, it has everything to do with the “how much” factor when you invest or trade. Investment professionals have called this factor “asset allocation” or “money management.” However, they failed to understand that the key aspect was “how much” to invest in any position. Others work so hard to get themselves a good system, but fail to realize that position sizing strategies are the key to getting what they really want. When you have a great trading system, it is certainly easier to meet your system objectives through your position sizing method; however, you still have a chance to meet your objectives and profit with an average system if you understand how to position size properly. Yes, your position sizing strategy is that important. For many years Dr. Tharp has specialized in helping traders and investors understand position sizing strategies and how to use them effectively. He originally published The Money Management Report as his guide to position sizing methods. But thanks to an overwhelming demand from his clients, we’ve now published the book you’ve all been waiting for, Dr. Tharp’s Definitive Guide to Position Sizing.

This is a report on proceedings of a hypertension symposium. The editors cover cardiac hypertrophy from several viewpoints -- structural, molecular, pathophysiological, and clinical. This is the 432nd volume in the series on advances in experimental medicine and biology. The purpose is to publish new information on the pathophysiology of hypertension. Medical residents, fellows, researchers, and practitioners who are interested in pathophysiology and the basic aspects of hypertension as well as the significance of left ventricular hypertrophy should find this text fascinating. The book is a good review of the structural changes of left ventricular hypertrophy and the epidemiology that results. Important pathophysiology and clinical aspects of hypertension are also discussed. The references at the end of each chapter are excellent, current, and extensive. The illustrations are all in black-and-white but add to the text. All chapters are relatively short and pertinent. The index is very helpful. This text will be useful for clinicians who are interested in the mechanisms of disease and curious about some of the basic science strategies for reducing left ventricular mass in the presence of hypertension (i.e., use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors). This book is well written. It is not a text of the management of hypertension such as the recent text by Beevers, Hypertension in Practice, 3rd Edition (Martin Dunitz, 1999) or Bohm's From Hypertension to Heart Failure (Springer-Verlag, 1998).
