Democratic peace-building and conflict prevention

by Luc Reychler (1999)

About this book

"In this book political scientist and peace researcher Luc Reychler gets to the heart of a major transformation of the international society at the end of the twentieth century, namely democratization. It addresses questions about the definition of democracy; the spread of it; the assessment of progress and the factors influencing the successes of failures of the transition process. Reychler rejects theories that posit that democracy is not inherently universal. He argues instead that a consolidated democracy has empirically shown to be the best instrument for guaranteeing freedom, respect for human rights, welfare and security. The problem however is in the democratic peace building process. The devil is in the transition. Many efforts will fail. But within a generation, he expects a fourth wave of democracy throughout the world that few analysts would have dared to imagine."--Jacket.

Corporation nation

Charles Derber

Foreword by Ralph Nader. In Corporation Nation Derber addresses the unchecked power of today's corporations to shape the way we work, earn, buy, sell, and think—the very way we live. Huge, far-reaching mergers are now commonplace, downsizing is rampant, and our lines of communication, news and entertainment media, jobs, and savings are increasingly controlled by a handful of global—and unaccountable—conglomerates. We are, in effect, losing our financial and emotional security, depending more than ever on the whim of these corporations. But it doesn't have to be this way, as this book makes clear. Just as the original Populist movement of the nineteenth century helped dethrone the robber barons, Derber contends that a new, positive populism can help the U.S. workforce regain its self-control. Drawing on core sociological concepts and demonstrating the power of the sociological imagination, he calls for revisions in our corporate system, changes designed to keep corporations healthy while also making them answerable to the people. From rewriting corporate charters to altering consumer habits, Derber offers new aims for businesses and empowering strategies by which we all can make

Understanding disputes

Pat Caplan

Are disputes ever really resolved, or do people need to find ways of accommodating them and living with the consequences? Can dispute settlement procedures at the local level be transferred to wider environments? In attempting to answer these questions, some of the foremost specialists in the anthropology of law and disputing behaviour examine how people in a variety of social settings, ranging from Ireland to East Africa, deal with quarrels and seek to resolve or accommodate them. This stimulating volume should be of interest to anyone concerned about the huge increase in conflict in many parts of the world.

Political risk analysis around the North Atlantic

Frederick Stapenhurst

During the 1970s and the 1980s, political risk analysis was increasingly undertaken by multinational corporations around the world. Recent developments in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, the Gulf and elsewhere have highlighted the need for multinational corporations to undertake such analysis and incorporate it into their decision-making. This book traces the emergence of the political risk assessment function in multinational corporations. From its genesis as an integral component of corporate environmental scanning, through its development as a distinct academic sub-discipline and separate corporate function, to its 'shake-out' phase of the late-1980s, this book critically examines the need for, and methodology of, corporate political risk assessment. Special attention is placed on the comparative analysis of political assessments in American, Canadian and West European corporations. Of particular interest are sections on country case-studies and corporate case-studies. The first highlights political risks as they were perceived by corporations doing business in Iran, Mexico, Poland, Portugal and South Korea, and reviews risk-management strategies adopted by particular corporations. The latter considers the organization and structure of the political risk assessment function in nine multinational corporations.
