Roads to Freedom

by Bertrand Russell (2004)

About this book

THE attempt to conceive imaginatively a better ordering of human society than the destructive and cruel chaos in which mankind has hitherto existed is by no means modern: it is at least as old as Plato, whose ``Republic'' set the model for the Utopias of subsequent philosophers. Whoever contemplates the world in the light of an ideal - whether what he seeks be intellect, or art, or love, or simple happiness, or all together - must feel a great sorrow in the evils that men needlessly allow to continue, and - if he be a man of force and vital energy - an urgent desire to lead men to the realization of the good which inspires his creative vision.

Judith Suissa

Although there have been a few historical accounts of the anarchist school movement, there has been no systematic work on the philosophical underpinnings of anarchist educational ideas - until now. *Anarchism and Education* offers a philosophical account of the neglected tradition of anarchist thought on education. Although few anarchist thinkers wrote systematically on education, this analysis is based largely on a reconstruction of the educational thought of anarchist thinkers gleaned from their various ethical, philosophical and popular writings. Primarily drawing on the work of the nineteenth century anarchist theorists such as Bakunin, Kropotkin and Proudhon, the book also covers twentieth century anarchist thinkers such as Noam Chomsky, Paul Goodman, Daniel Guerin and Colin Ward. This original work will interest philosophers of education and educationalist thinkers as well as those with a general interest in anarchism. (Source: Routledge

If Nietzsche's contemporary popularity implies that his political values inadvertently creep in, then it is relevant to trace his revaluation historically: to provide insight into the problematic sides of his ideas. After all, inspiration by Nietzsche has its daunting parallel in history and his 'influence' in nazi Germany has never been seriously debated. What happened at that time is generally in advance considered as abuse. The question was firstly what passages in Nietzsche's work the nazi's referred to, and secondly how his impact was interpreted by others. To establish whether the assertions are justified an account is given of the main interpretations that, from different perspectives, relate Nietzsche to nazism. Causality assumes necessity, as the only possible thing, which in the strict sense of the term cannot be proven in the history of ideas. So it is essential to distinguish between tendentious and teleological interpretation. The latter assumes an explanation with a purpose it serves, but its target does not exclude other approaches.

Christian Anarchy

Vernard Eller

A far-ranging study of the Christian relationship to the state and all wordly powers, this book is as provocative as its unusual title. "Christian Anarchy” says Vernard Eller, "is the faith in God's primacy as sovereign Lord and orderer of history which is given such weight that all the big claims of self-confident human scheming and power-play become sheer distraction.
